Try iTalki for 1-to-1 Japanese Skype lessons !

1-to-1 lessons is the best way to practice speaking, and a super convenient way to do it these days is via Skype. I've been taking Skype lessons with several really nice Japanese teachers I found on the iTalki website, and have had a great experience with them. The prices vary by teacher but are in general very reasonable and lower than most in-person private lessons - in addition to all the time and money saved on transport and cafe fees etc. You can check out the iTalki site here:

New App coming soon - Kanji Crush!

16/9/2013

Look out for the upcoming app Kanji Crush, and see what a Match-3 game can be using kanji! In the simplest mode you just match identical kanji, in the most challenging mode you match any kanji with the same onyomi - that'll make sudoku seem easy!! There are also reference views of the kanji grouped by level, radical and onyomi which are great for review. Stay tuned.

JAPanese reading practice 1

30/8/2013

One nice bit of reading practice I get is from the '3-minute Easy Japanese News' a 'mail magazine' service sent out by Yumei, a Japanese teacher in Tokyo. It is fantastic to have the reading come to your email inbox where you will actually get around to reading it (takes the need for will power out of study!)
It first has the original (very) short article, followed by the article with readings given for kanji compounds, then a glossary with English meanings for all vocabulary.

It is probably most suitable for a JLPT N3 learner, and you can sign up here!

Kanji connect down temporarily!

5/6/2013

I've stopped Kanji Connect sales on the appstore temporarily while we add iPhone5 graphics. The app wasn't starting on iPhone5 due (we think) to a new rule from Apple that all apps support iPhone5 format. It should be back up within a week or so.

If you like'm please do support them with FB likes and app store reviews - it all counts and is much appreciated! As an independent developer I have to count on word of mouth for promotion!

The new app Kanji Connect is under review at the app store now!It is basically a recoded version of Kanji Wordsearch. It is now coded in AS3/Flex in order to be able to publish to various platforms, including web and Android. It has a few new features, including the following:
- Fixed a bug whereby target words would sometimes overlap.

- Changed data to suit Japanese Language Proficiency Test.

- Reduced number of kanji in each level to 25

- Allows multiple lists to be selected for use in game.

- Changed selection method of kanji in game from 'drag' to 'tap individually'

- New graphics, animations and sounds.

- Added stages: if players get enough points (word + timer), they can pass the stage and continue build on their score in the next stage.

- Added better in-game help page
